While you will come on board for a specific project, we have a robust pipeline of projects to keep strong performers challenged for years to come. While you will spend some time in the field, your overnight travel will be minimal.

Right off the bat you will oversee several Project Managers coordinating the preparation of cell sites (antennas, base stations, etc) for transition from T1 copper to fiber optic connections throughout Northern California. To be a good fit for this opportunity you will have significant experience managing multiple projects and teams side by side, ideally with projects in wireless civil works. We're looking for a strong leader with outstanding problem solving skills and a demonstrated ability to partner effectively with demanding customers. The ideal candidate will be able not only to identify and respond to issues, but also to anticipate them.

What Else You'll Bring to the Table

In addition to the qualifications detailed above, you'll need:

Strong knowledge of project management principles and methodologies.

Preferred but not required:

Experience managing cell site deployment projects.
Previous associations with major wireless carriers.
Formal training in project management and/or PMP certification.
A bachelor's degree.

More About Your Role

Reporting to the Director, PMO, your first program will be the fiber to cell site described above, which we're performing for a first tier wireless carrier. Future projects may be for first and second tier carriers and the vendors who support them.

The current program is a rolling project with fairly aggressive timelines. The first phase started in March 2009 and will prepare 500 cell sites for fiber by December. We've also just launched the 2010 program, with a goal of prepping 700 sites by the end of the first quarter.

Your objectives and activities for this program will be similar to those of future ones. You'll provide leadership for two to five Project Managers, each of whom is managing a specific project or portion of a larger project. Your key objectives will include:

Instilling focus and providing clear direction for the Project Managers.
Developing project teams that have strong leadership and are well-managed.
Completing well-managed projects whose success encourages repeat business.
Managing among competing priorities.

More specifically you will meet frequently with the Project Managers, both for project status meetings and to support their professional development. You also will generate reports for and meet regularly with the customer. Of course, issue identification and resolution also will be part of your regular activities.

Future projects may include terminal extensions, out-of-scope extensions, cabinet installations, cell site audits and other civil works related projects specific to cell sites.
